In drag racing, the spring is an intricate component of the suspension. The importance of springs has been ignored by most drag racers; however, you will find that the winningest racers spend an immense amount of time adjusting and tuning their suspension to obtain an advantage. To receive the best performance from a shock set-up, the spring must be able to work in harmony with the suspension.
Question: What makes Hypercoils better than the rest? Answer: All coils look similar but there are tremendous differences not apparent or visible to the naked eye. Hypercoil drag racing springs are cold-wound from preheat treated SAE 9254 chrome silicon wire. Optimum wire diameter is selected for the individual design- without compromise. After coiling, the closed ends are ground, and the spring is thermally stress relieved, pre-set and shot-peened. Completed springs are magnafluxed, inspected, epoxy powder coated and checked for dimensions, trueness and rate. Hyperco then tests each coil for actual rate and etches the rate permanently into the spring. Hypercoils strict manufacturing tolerances assure the racer of springs within a tolerance range of +/- 2%- most being within 1%!
The dominant chassis in drag racing are designed and manufactured by professional race car builders. Because these chassis are for sale to all competitors it makes it difficult to have a significant advantage in the chassis itself. Increasingly the advantages are in the details and the components selected for the chassis. Suspension setup/ components are an area all top competitors and builders exploit as a performance advantage. Hypercoils are consistent through travel and maintain the desired ride height, allowing for optimization of shock/strut tuning. To gain an edge, high quality, consistent suspension coils are essential.
